Malaysia: eight of nine anti-dumping measures now cover iron and steel

By ·

In short: Malaysia’s trade ministry said on 12 October 2026 that eight of its nine anti-dumping measures cover iron and steel products.

A coated-steel investigation opened in August is still running.

In a written parliamentary reply published on 12 October 2026, Malaysia's Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) said eight of the country's nine anti-dumping measures in force cover iron and steel products, including steel wire and galvanised sheet (source 1). MITI described these products as intermediate inputs for manufacturing and said it continues to monitor import prices; new anti-dumping, countervailing or safeguard measures may follow where investigations find injury (source 1).

  • Malaysia's total imports rose 22.4 % year on year in January–August 2026; imports from China rose 41.2 % (source 1).
  • In August 2026 Malaysia opened an anti-dumping investigation into aluminium-zinc coated flat steel from China, Chinese Taipei and Vietnam, and an expiry review of duties on pre-painted steel coil from China and Vietnam (source 2).
  • The preliminary determination in the coated-steel case is due within 120 days of initiation (source 2).

What this means for buyers

For sheet-metal and enclosure fabricators in Malaysia, coated and galvanised sheet are core materials, and further duties are possible. Practical steps:

  • Watch the coated-steel case: a preliminary decision is expected around the end of 2026.
  • Keep supplier paperwork: mill certificates showing country of origin.
  • Use less material per part: nesting, common-line cutting and a narrow kerf — see our cost per part calculator.
